2008 Past Events
What is the Five/12 Agenda?
Over the last few years the City of Bellingham has made a lot of progress in green building and low impact development and as the practices are becoming more common, the number of local LEED accredited professionals has skyrocketed, the city has formed a “green team”, 1,500 industry professionals including 200 city staff have attended green building/smart growth events in 2008 alone and the number of LEED projects has increased significantly. There is still a lot more that can be done to increase the use of green building practices. Studies have indicated that across the region the absence of a streamlined process for green building permitting acts as a significant hindrance to the realization of green building’s potential. Local analysis reveals the same result; industry professionals perceive significant code and zoning barriers to green building and are interested in the types of green building incentives offered in other jurisdictions.
Five over 12 is an initiative to significantly increase the application of green building practices by responding to the perceived barriers and collaboratively solving problems. In early 2009 Sustainable Connections will facilitate the development of a comprehensive list of barriers and possible incentives with extensive input from the city and industry. The city is eager to implement solutions and has committed to working to achieving five success stories over the next 12 months, hence Five/12.

This inspiring film argues for widespread adoption of green building practices while still presenting the contradictions and quandaries this new frontier presents. Example: The Macallen Boston building saves 600,000 gallons of water, uses 30% less energy, and employs earth-saving building materials like highly compressed straw. The film achieves natural tension by following the struggle to achieve LEED gold status, and revels in the greening of southern Boston's construction workers-born skeptics who rise to the occasion.
