Construction Waste Recycling: Waste turned Profit
Thursday, November 6, 2008    3:00-6:00pm

Familiar with that whole waste=food concept?  Well, this is it: your chance to find out how one local construction firm has turned their construction waste operations around by an anticipated $30,000 per year.  Paying to dispose of waste seemed like an outdated idea for Louws Truss of Ferndale... so they devised a waste management plan that is paying out serious profit. Check out the case study.

We're also joined by special guest, Terry Gillis of Recovery One (Tacoma) where he heads up the most innovative waste processing station in the Nation.  Not only is his operation finding innovative ways to deal with new waste streams, he's taking your construction waste and turning out new materials to be used back on your jobsite instead of heading for that pesky landfill.

Finally, you'll hear the West Side "Seattle" Story: dollars in deconstruction.  The true value of deconstruction travels far beyond environmental benefits.

Hear from a RE Store residential deconstruct that produced a $60,000 tax rebate for the homeowner, provided retail sales of over $50,000 in materials and a savings of over $15,000 in dump costs all from one job site.  Hear a compelling story from the deconstruction project manager for The RE Store as he unveils the financial pitch for going for deconstruction vs. demolition.

Sustainable Connections will provide LaFiamma snacks and beverages to participants that RSVP for this event.  Stick around post panel for happy hour with our guests and help close out an excellent year of Towards Zero Waste.

Location: Sustainable Connections NEW office: 1701 Ellis Street
When: Thursday, November 6,  3:00pm-5:00pm (happy hour from 5-6:00).

The Greening of Southie (film showing)
This inspiring film argues for widespread adoption of green building practices while still presenting the contradictions and quandaries this new frontier presents. Example: The Macallen Boston building saves 600,000 gallons of water, uses 30% less energy, and employs earth-saving building materials like highly compressed straw. The film achieves natural tension by following the struggle to achieve LEED gold status, and revels in the greening of southern Boston's construction workers-born skeptics who rise to the occasion.

Showing at the Pickford Film Center:
Sunday, October 26 at 3:30pm
Monday, October 27 at 6:30pm

  - learn the strengths and weaknesses of the program

  - discuss challenges associated with LEED

  - trouble shoot with builders who have built under LEED-H
    certification

Cost: $15.00

Where: Sustainable Connections - 1701 Ellis Street

When: Thursday, October 9, 4:00-6:00pm

SC will provide beverages to inspire a creative how-to session.  A must for contractors who've even inhaled air near the acronym "LEED'.  Details by contacting Nick at the SC office.   360-647-7093 x107

Fundamentals in Green Building and the LEED™ Rating System Series

This series of classes will provide a fundamental understanding of green building and how its principals and strategies apply to the United States Green Building Council’s LEED™ Rating system.  These classes will provide a base knowledge of how to prepare for the LEED NC V2.1 Accreditation exam and how to apply green building strategies to your projects.  This class is geared towards architects, engineers, owners, end users, developers, builders and interested individuals who are interested in learning more about green building.  Principles discussed will focus on commercial building, but will apply to the residential market.

Attendants will learn about green strategies in Site Development, Water Efficiency, Energy Efficiency, Green Building Materials and Indoor Environmental Quality.  We will discuss topics such as integrated design, life cycle analysis, green building rating systems and current hot topics debated in the industry. We will apply these strategies to sample projects and work as teams to experience how these green building strategies apply to real life project scenarios. Class attendees will also take a LEED AP practice exam.

GREEN BUILDING MATERIALS: What Makes Materials Green?

Tools, Sourcing, Performance Evaluation & Cost

Wednesday, February 22, 3:30 to 6:30 pm
Enjoy presentations from the Environmental Home Center, the RE Store and an informative discussion on the resources available through Sustainable Connections lead by Brennan Schumacher.  Sheila McElhinney from the Environmental Home Center will discuss the product research, how to work with the EHC and address Green materials cost comparisons.  Dean Fearing, the Manager of the RE Store will discuss unique re-used materials often available and services available such as deconstruction.

RE Store: (www.re-store.org)

The RE Store was founded in 1993 by RE Sources for Sustainable Communities to address the growing problem of wasteful disposal of useable building materials, most of which were buried in the local landfill. The RE Store provides an alternative to dumping those materials.

Environmental Home Center: (www.environmentalhomecenter.org)

Environmental Home Center (EHC) helped pioneer the green building industry in Seattle and today is a leading supplier of green building materials in the northwest.  EHC offers stylish, durable and price competitive building and finish materials that are resource-efficient, energy-efficient or better for your health.
